Do you keep track events in your hometown?Do you want to just relax when you are troubled?Echoes of Silence is the best advice I can give you for this kind of situations. So what is Echoes of Silence? It's a photographic exhibition that consists of forty-four photographs of libraries and opera houses and is displayed in Arkas Art Center. In this exhibition, you can see Europe's most venerable libraries and opera houses that was taken by Ahmet Ertuğ.

Maybe you are unfamiliar with this name, yet Ahmet Ertuğ is known worldwide thanks to his magnificent works and exhibitions that were displayed all orund the world. After studying architecture at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London,as a practise for architect he photographed ancient monuments, covered bazaars, indigenous settlements in Iran and urban street life in London.Awarded a Japan Foundation fellowship, he decided to take up photography as a career while traveling. With his successful works, he owned a good reputation and became known by artists.Since 2001, he has started to open exhibitions in many part of the world such as Paris, New York, Vienna.
As I mentioned before, this exhibition consists of 40 pieces of picture and unfortunately I cannot talk about all of them but can give you an information from both of them.

TEATRO COMUNALE DI BOLOGNA

This incredible opera house is one of the most important opera venues in Italy and has a different story that distunguish it from others.
When it was first constructed, one of Giuseppe Verdi's composition was displayed for the opening ceremony.Yet it was not appreciated and was thought to be grotty. Then central committee decided not to show off his works for a long time.Later it come out that this misconception was resulted from the building's acoustic fault not from theVerdi's work. However, this fault caused 19th century Italian romantic composer to get in depression and avoid from the music.

THE OVAL ROOM,NATIONAL LIBRARY OF FRANCE,PARIS

The Oval Room is one of the most fundamental library of both France and the world.Initally, it was founded in Louvre in 1368 then moved to new building due to a series of regime changes. In fact, it was intended to be the storage of all that was published in France.Nonetheless, later it turned into national library. It seems an ordinary one but more than a library. It holds the rarest objects including the first example of human writing. What's more,it contains not only France history but also other nations such as 5.000 Greek manuscript.Apart from the impressing oval reading room and many dedicated libraries, it is also a site for seperate art galleries, hosting numerous exhibits throughout the year.In a word,it should be one of your primal stop while exploring France.

PS:You can visit this fabulous exhibition until 30th December 2012 or see same pictures via his website "The Photography of Ahmet Ertuğ".However, the website won't give equal pleasure so I insistly recommend to visit it.

FIND THE SIMILARITY

A couple weeks ago, in New York subway station a homeless guy who is presumed a mentally unbalanced person pushed 50-year-old man Han Ki-Suk to the approaching train and brought about him to die in a harsh way.According to eyewitnesses,Han tried to calm down the aggressive man who disturbed people in the station, nevertheless the criminal became frantic and pushed him to railroad line. Then the police authorities later arrested the homeless guy Naeem Davis.Yet this incident is not that simple as it is seen. The main part of it is the photograph that was taken seconds before he lost his life. Thus New York Post using this photo divided the world public opinion into two groups by giving "...This man is about to die DOOMED." title.

On the one hand,NY Post readers criticised the photographer brutally for taking picture instead of helping him.In order to defend Umar Abbasi, NY Posy answered back that actually he was  running toward the train to warn the officer in charge by flashlighting consantly. Then Abbasi added his statement that I was too far away from the train to reach him before its arrival and due to shock I wasn't aware of taking many pictures. However, both answers were not sufficient to satify people.
On the other hand,Abbasi was supported by his colleaques. One of said,"Honestly I don't find him guilty as there were many other people in the station and none of them helped Han Ki-Suk.Thus, in this case either everyone have to be blamed or nobody is found guilty."
As each side has sensible defensive points,it looks like this argument continues to be one of the top topics in the world.

This picture is among ten photographs that changes the world and was taken by Kevin Carter,an award-winning South African photojournalist. Therefore, what is the story of it? What makes it special?
In March 1993,while on a trip to Sudan,he saw a child who was starving to death and trying to reach United Nations feeding center which was in 1 kilometer distance and a vulture which was waiting for child death. In spite of heartbreaking situation, Carter just took a picture of them and left doing nothing but his "JOB".Then he sold it to New York Times. The day (26 March 1993) it was published, abruptly it became known worldwide and transferred to other newspapers.Hundreds of people contacted to Times to ask the fate of the girl. The newspaper reported that it was unknown whether she had managed to reach the feeding center. In fact, people guessed her fate yet nobody wanted to say it aloud.A year after it was taken, the photograph won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography. However, his regret obstructed all his fulfillment for winning the award. In the end, he couldn't stand and committed a suicide at the age of 33.
Anyone who is curious about his life can watch his documentary which is The Death of Kavin Carter:Casualty of The Bang Bang Club.

All in all, after reading and comparing these pictures can you find the similarity? What would you do if you were one of these photographers? Do you think people solely live for popularity or humanity? Which one? What would be your choice?  Everyone should ask these questions to theirselves.

SANDY HURRICANE

On 30th October 2012 Unıted States experienced the most devastating hurricane in their history which is called Sandy. Thus what exactly Sandy is? It was generated in Atlantic and the most giant hurricane that had been recorded. After causing massive damage in Caribbean ,it aimed US,especially east coasts which are New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and paralysed lifes in there. " Major Catastrophe" was declared. All transportatıon services were called off for a while.Due to government's creepy warning, people did not come out from their house and stores were closed. Moreover,as waves reached siz metres people didn't approach the seasides and the ones who lived near coastal loaded out their house, moved the inner part of the region. Thus busy streets, touristic places even main highways became deserted.Plus, totally over 6 million people were lack of electricity.

Sandy hurricane suprised the government in many points. It damaged more than it was expected. It was also valid for financial effects.Initially, commisive waste was estimated between 30 and 35 billion dollars.Nevertheless, at the end it reached 50 billion dollars which was much higher than Irene hurricane that occured last year and its material damage was around 28 billion dollars.

Among the Sandy's victim cities,New York was the most well-prepared one.Preparations started weeks ago.Full length queues formed in front of the supermarkets to buy sand bag(for blocking windows and doors), flashlight, battery etc. Colleges were closed down and flights were called off.Plus, Central Park was closed for precaution. As trees might have fell down over people. At the same time, mayor Micheal Bloomberg constantly made an announcementabout precautionary measure on radio and television.Even Wall Street Stock Market had stopped their actions for the first time since the eleventh of September. However, all these preparations were insufficient. Many houses and seven subway stations were flooded. What's more, after the explosion in electricity transformer 3 million people had to live in darkness. It was like "The City That Never Sleeps" fell asleep.

New Yorkers had never experienced an event like that. The city which has 8 million population turned into a ghost city.

 NEW JERSEY'S UNINVITED VISITOR

In Brigantine,New Jersey people saw a shark that swam between houses while dwellers were trying to move.Instead of moving away from there, they just took a picture and made jokes about it.
